Hello families,

Today we:

-Learned a new Lively Letter- the quiet choking sound 'k'.

-Went to the Library! Students can sign out 2 books and they must be kept in the classroom. Please ask your child to tell you about the books they chose.

-Wrote messages on hearts for National Truth and Reconciliation Day. Tomorrow morning, students and staff will take part in a ceremony where they take their hearts outside and lay them as a garden of hearts. These hearts serve as a reminder of the children who were lost to residential schools and the way that all of us can work towards fixing the sadness and generational hurt that residential schools have caused.

Reminders:

-Tomorrow is Orange Shirt Day. If possible, your child is invited to wear an orange shirt to honour and remember the experiences of Indigenous students who attended residential schools.

-Thursday, September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. There will be no school on that day.

-Please make sure that you are checking your child's folder after school and sending it back to school every day.

Hello families,

Today we:

-Learned a new Lively Letter- the noisy lip biting sound 'v'.

-Continued to work on the words of the week that we learned last week (a, at, and, the).

-Learned the 'at' word family and found so many words in our "Pat the Cat" poem (pat, cat, rat, mat, sat, fat). Ask your child if they can tell you some 'at' family words.

-Started to practice how to properly print numbers from 1-5.

-We read the book "When We Were Alone" and had a discussion about residential schools. We talked about how the children at those schools felt and how children SHOULD feel at school. As a class, we decided that all students at school should feel safe, free, happy, excited, inspired, respected and loved.

Reminder:

On September 29th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to recognize Orange Shirt Day and National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community. Orange Shirt day began in 2013 when residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared how her orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school. For more information about Orange Shirt Day please visit https://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/what-is-orange-shirt-day

September 30 is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. The intention of this day is to recognize and honor residential school survivors, their families and communities. It also ensures that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. This is a non-operation day for the CBE. Our students will be engaging in learning on September 29 to honor this important day. On the evening of September 29, we invite our families to come by the school and follow our knowledge walk between 4PM-6PM. We will also have a garden of hearts display which demonstrate each member of our schools community commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, and have been generated based on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.

Hello families,

As you may have heard from Mrs. Brinson, I will be away for a week or two. I was in an accident over the long weekend and I am recuperating at home. Starting tomorrow, there will be a consistent guest teacher to bring some stability in the class. I'm very disappointed at the timing, as I was just starting to get to know my students. Thank you for your support and I look forward to being back soon to work with you wonderful children!
